The technique used for the removal and elimination of both bacterial plaque, pigments, tartar and other organic deposits that adhere to the surfaces of the teeth, either supragingival, that is, at the level of the dental crown or on the line of the gum, or, infragingival, below the line of the gum; is called Scaling and Root Planing.
This procedure is the treatment of choice for periodontal disease; howeverand is also important to perform it for the maintenance of dental hygiene; which ensures an optimal state of the periodontium and health of the oral cavity.
To do it, the health professional scrapes the surfaces of the root with the aim of smoothing and removing the roughness of its surface, eliminating the bacterial film that has adhered to it. It can be done either by pneumatic or ultrasonic devices that remove tartar and bacterial plaque by vibrations. Or with the use of manual instruments (escariodontos and curettes), which help to remove the remaining waste.
It is important to first perform a complete clinical and radiographic examination of the oral cavity and integrate them into a periodontogram; this is a clinical record in which the most relevant data on gingival health are recorded, such as the presence of bleeding and depth on probing, as well as the presence and degree of dental mobility.
It is necessary that the periodontogram be constantly updated during patient treatment so that the evolution that has been achieved can be evaluated and compared, as well as an incentive for the patients, who will be able to see the satisfactory change of the previously registered values.
The Scaling and Root Planing is indicated for:
- Elimination of bacteria and toxins adhered to the root surface.
- Removal of tartar and bacterial film located under the soft tissues.
With this procedure you will get:
- Disinflammation of the gingival tissue.
- Recovery of color, appearance and texture of soft tissues.
- Reduction of periodontal pockets.
- Elimination of gingival bleeding.
- Avoid loss of bone level.
It is necessary that the patient collaborate in certain aspects to ensure the success of the procedure. The patient must:
- Attend all maintenance consultations and periodontal examinations.
- Use appropriate toothbrush, brush and dental floss or interproximal brush daily.
- Use proper brushing technique, three times a day for the necessary time.
It should be taken into account that the Periodontal Disease is progressive and infectious, but it is possible to control it. In case a treatment is not carried out for this purpose, there is the possibility of losing the affected dental pieces. After the treatment, hypersensitivity usually results, so it is recommended to use toothpastes or other desensitizing products in the market to alleviate it the sensitivity. A good choice would be the use of Enamelin, a mouthwash whose properties and high calcium content allow it to penetrate the dentinal tubules and remineralize the dentin and the enamel, thus eliminating the sensitivity easily and quickly. The treatment can be performed in an average of 2 to 4 sessions, according to the needs of each patient and their periodontal status.
